Maple leaf bullet. Next issue

We're running a slightly different format these days. Rather than publish a longer newsletter on a set weekly schedule, we're sending shorter newsletters on an irregular basis these days. Hope you enjoy!

Maple leaf bullet. Subscriptions

You too can receive these newsletters in your e-mail. All you need to do is enter your e-mail address in the form in the top, right-hand corner of any page on the site and click the "GO!" button. So sign up now, eh!

Maple leaf bullet. Suggestions

If you have a suggestion for an article, factoid, joke, statistic or anything else for the newsletter, please send it to our researcher. Any comments about this Web site can be directed to the webmaster.

Special Announcement — February 25, 2002.

February 25, 2002.

[John] Many of you have wondered what the heck has happened to us. Although we did get this month's Friday Feature out only a few days later than planned, we last issued a "weekly" Sunday Newsletter on (or around) January 13. Well, here's the story and the plan in less than the 1500 words I was originally going to use to tell you what's going on here at FactsCanada.ca.

First the story. What it all boils down to is that things are not the same for Craig and I as they were back on July 1, 2000, when FactsCanada.ca was born. Much as we try and much as we'd like to return to those halcyon days of that summer, we cannot. Between challenges at work (including an involuntary 46 percent reduction in my earnings), health problems for us or the ones we love, new commitments, and all of the other challenges that all of you also face every day, we cannot keep up the pace we have for most of the last 20 months. We tried taking a break and doing reruns for a few months, but when we returned it wasn't working any better for us than it was before.

So what should we do? Fold up our tent and go home? Not likely! Craig and I have put too much time and effort (not to mention money) into this endeavour just to slip off into the night. Besides, so many of you have told us how much you enjoy what we do, and we can't let you down.

Here are the options: Adapt or die. Here's the plan: Adapt.

We're not about to become FactsBolivia.bo, but we are going to make some fundamental changes to what we have been doing so far while, for the most part, staying within the boundaries laid out in our mission statement. To summarize what we envision, we are going to become a Web site with a newsletter, rather than a newsletter with a Web site. Our focus has always been the Sunday Newsletter, with the Web site being mainly an archive of those newsletters and a way for potential new subscribers to find us. What we're going to do is, over the next few months, automate some of the processes on the Web site to make it more interactive, as well as being easier for both Craig and I (and perhaps a few select individuals) to shape and mould the content of the site.

What does that mean in plain English, and how will it affect you? First, we'd like to put stuff on the site that would interest you. What interests you? Polls? On-line forums? Picture galleries? On-line communities and instant messaging? News feeds from major news outlets? A book store? Let us know, which you can do by replying to this message.

Second, we're going to set up a system (although I'm not 100 percent sure how yet) whereby I can slip a single short article into the site without needing to know all of the technical stuff that Craig does. The article will appear on the home page, and will be simultaneously e-mailed to all of our subscribers. In short, instead of getting one big newsletter on a regular, weekly basis, you'll receive several individual articles on a sporadic basis. Maybe one week there will be three or four, or maybe there will be none for a couple of weeks. Sometimes it will be a bit of history, a biography, a joke, or maybe even a rant about some current event -- much the same content as you have seen in the Sunday Newsletter. What you will receive and when will depend on what is happening in the world and in my life at the time.

Through this paradigm shift FactsCanada.ca will adapt and live on. Change is inevitable (as are clichés), and we will embrace it. We hope that you will too, and stick with us through the next few months as we work out the bugs. Thanks.
